Traditional Tracking in the Underground Environment
Until electronic tracking was adopted in mining and tunneling, tracking was traditionally a manual process involving ‘Tag-in/Tag-out’ boards at the portals. Workers would need to follow the process of tagging-in, by placing the tag on the board as they entered, and tagging-out, by removing the tag on the board as they left the underground operations. Manual tracking can lead to discrepancies, which can lead to risk.
Workers in underground environments do not want to lose their cap lamps, it is one of the few ways that they can light up their work area, know where they are going, and identify what is around them. NLT realized that they could innovate in the cap lamp market by creating the first IoT cap lamp that could enable not just personnel tracking but other safety, security, and productivity applications.
